IVF treatments –
Understanding the IVF Process
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a comprehensive and intricate fertility treatment that offers hope to couples striving to conceive. The process involves several key steps:
- Ovulation Induction: The process starts with controlled ovarian stimulation. Fertility medications are prescribed to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, as opposed to the single egg typically produced during a natural menstrual cycle. Ultrasound monitoring and blood tests are conducted to track the progress of egg development.
- Egg Retrieval (Aspiration): Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed. This is usually done under light anesthesia to ensure comfort. A thin needle is guided through the vaginal wall to extract the eggs from the ovaries. The retrieved eggs are then placed in a special culture medium in the laboratory.
- Sperm Collection: On the same day as egg retrieval, the male partner provides a sperm sample. The sperm sample is then prepared in the lab to isolate the healthiest and most active sperm.
- Fertilization: The mature eggs and prepared sperm are combined in a controlled environment within the laboratory. Fertilization typically occurs within a few hours. The embryos are monitored and assessed for quality as they develop over the next few days.
- Embryo Transfer: Once the embryos reach an optimal stage of development, typically after 3 to 5 days, one or more embryos are carefully selected for transfer. The chosen embryos are placed into the uterus through the cervix using a thin catheter. This step is usually painless and does not require anesthesia.
- Luteal Phase Support: Hormonal medications, such as progesterone, are often prescribed to support the uterine lining and aid in embryo implantation.
- Pregnancy Test: Approximately 10 to 14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is performed to determine if pregnancy has occurred. If successful, ongoing prenatal care will follow.
- Cryopreservation (Optional): Any extra embryos of good quality that are not transferred can be cryopreserved (frozen) for future use. This minimizes the need for additional ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval procedures in the future.
It’s important to note that each IVF cycle can vary based on individual circumstances. By providing guidance and support at every stage, Dr. Mrunal empowers couples on their journey to parenthood.
